According to a report, the China Mobile Communications Association (CMCA) and other industry participants, including China’s telecom giants, established the GPT Industry Alliance in Beijing on Tuesday.
The Shanghai Securities News reported on Tuesday that the alliance seeks to investigate the essence and emerging mechanism of intelligence and to incubate a more “inclusive, secure, and self-developed universal artificial intelligence (AI) in China.”
As the sole national social organization representing the Chinese mobile communications industry, the CMCA’s membership includes state-owned industry conglomerates such as China Mobile and China Unicom.
The competition between AI’s major language models has reached a crucial juncture. Ni Jianzhong, executive president of the CMCA, stated at the alliance’s inauguration ceremony that ChatGPT has not ignited a crisis but a significant opportunity for the industry’s iterative development in China.
“We must embrace artificial intelligence, seize the digital intelligence era, and make China the global innovation hub in the global ‘intelligence’ game.”
According to the report, the alliance will create “a solid bridge between the government, academia, and industry, thereby giving birth to China’s independent universal AI.”
In addition, the alliance will seek to investigate the mechanism and engineering path of intelligent emergence, identify original innovation opportunities in the era of AI, and invent a technological architecture that supports the emergence and circulation of intelligent business value, according to the report.
The alliance is also committed to transforming the power of AI into a potent digital force that benefits humanity.
China’s cyberspace authority issued a draft regulation for artificial intelligence on April 11, expressing unambiguous support for the innovation, promotion, and application of AI algorithms and frameworks. The regulation, which is open for public comment until May 10th, is viewed as a boon for China’s burgeoning artificial intelligence industry amid a global race to launch ChatGPT-like services.
Major Chinese technology companies, including Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu, have all announced the release of or plans to release ChatGPT-like chatbots, and are considering integrating these services into consumer applications.
