A tourist who was 65 years old and fell around 40 feet from the Lanikai Pillbox Trail on Sunday was fatally injured.
According to the Honolulu EMS, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
In order to provide assistance to the family, the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii was contacted.
According to Jessica Lani Rich, who works at VASH, “What’s particularly heartbreaking about this situation is that Sunday was the daughter’s 30th birthday, and they were celebrating, and they were going on the hike to celebrate.”
The hiker was part of a family that traveled from Maryland and arrived late on Friday night.
“This is not the birthday the daughter was planning, and she is absolutely heartbroken,” said Rich. “This is not the birthday the daughter was planning.”
A rehabilitation project that will cost up to one million dollars is now in the planning process when the unfortunate fatality occurred on the popular trail, according to the state lawmaker for the area.
“The Department of Land and Natural Resources is committed to having a person, a human, there to do education when they restore the route there. “Could it possibly become a reservation system in the not-too-distant future?” asked state Representative Lisa Marten.
The VASH organization has stated that it will maintain its support for the family throughout this challenging time.
