Veolia has obtained the operation and maintenance contract for Turkey’s first and Europe’s largest waste-to-energy facility, located in Istanbul.
With a processing capacity of approximately 1.1 million tonnes of non-recyclable household waste per year, the facility is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 1.5 million tonnes per year.
This will predominantly be accomplished through the production of 560,000 MWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 1,400,000 city residents.
1.4 million people will get 560,000 MWh of electricity from the 85 MW turbine plant.
This is the first installation of its kind in Turkey, and it seeks to decarbonize the country’s waste sector through energy recovery and recycling in order to avoid carbon-emitting landfills. The initiative directly contributes to the nation’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2053.
Under the provisions of the agreement, Veolia will be responsible for the entire operation and maintenance of the facility, ensuring strict compliance with the environmental standards of the European Union, enhancing energy efficiency, and decreasing utility consumption.
Commenting on the agreement, Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia, stated, “We are delighted to contribute to Turkey’s ecological transformation by operating the nation’s first waste-to-energy plant. In accordance with the nation’s goal of carbon neutrality, this is an essential step forward in the management of waste and energy in the city of Istanbul.
Together with our Turkish partners, we are thrilled to carry out this historic initiative and establish aregional benchmark for waste management.”
STA Deputy General Manager Ozgür Barşkan said
“The launch of Turkey’s first commercial-scale and Europe’s largest waste-to-energy plant represents a historic milestone in our nation’s sustainable development. For this endeavor, STA desired to collaborate with an internationally renowned and seasoned leader in environmental solutions.
